International Happenings

I’m so tired of hearing about Tiger Woods or Michael Vick. I really don’t give a shit what they did when there is more important stuff going on in the world. What about North Korea or the problems inside of Iran? Just look at the top underreported stories for 2010 and you can be as fucking annoyed as I am: the status of Iraq, Jihadists taking Somalia and mass rapes in the Congo. The American media always wants to report (more…)

I’ve thought long and hard about this topic. This was a tough one to present. I want to caveat my statements by saying I’m not Muslim, nor am I a Christian, a Jew, a Hindu, whatever. I don’t do the organized religion. I defend freedom of religion, religion that treats others with respect and kindness – Islam does, it’s radical Islam that doesn’t. Let me break it down real fast before I get into this:

Radical Islam : IslamĀ  <——- as ——-> Westboro Baptist Church : Christianity

Yeah I couldn’t sleep last night. At least I get to go home a bit early. However, there’s some news that’s been irking me since I checked my RSS feeds for the day.

First off, yet again, a faction of Islam is blaming bad shit in the world on women. This gets tiresome so fast – it’s just another attempt at social control on women. There’s no fucking correlation between showing a little leg or hair (seriously he was complaining about hair showing under scarves) and a damn earthquake. Perhaps this is an even greater attempt to get people behind the idea of building a new capital at Qom, which would have NO significance as being the site of the Fordow uranium enrichment facility, right? Yet Ahmadinejad has said people should leave Tehran and plans to build that capital at Qom. Oh what the hell, they are just crazy. This is not the fault of women, dressing for comfort doesn’t make the world fall over.

Did they or didn’t they? Push and pull fight about Syria giving scuds to Hezbollah. Mossad might be one of the best agencies in the world, and I have problems doubting the veracity of this claim. Syria has been unstable for so long, and gotten their ass beaten by Israel so many times that I really think they would slip a few scuds south. This could be exceptionally dangerous for Israel – if it turns out this is true, prepare for heavy rolls as retaliation strikes forth. This is gonna hurt. Supplementing this, there is another story about White House fears that Syria is leaking “advanced” technology. It’s like they continue to want to piss Israel off, yet they know they are going to get smashed into little piles of goo. If anyone can show the world that a little bit of determination will go a long way, then it is the Israelis.

I find this amusing as hell. I don’t know how they plan to collect, but it’s funny that GW forgot to return some books. It’s going to be FUNNIER when someone DOES find them somewhere.

There’s a reason that picture is under the “creepy” folder. That’s a MIRV reentry of an old peacekeeper missile. In light of the news, I think it’s somewhat appropriate. In fact, the world gets creepier and creepier every fucking day.

On a side note, I just caught two stories on the BBC I had missed earlier.

First off, Ehud Barak, the man that MADE Sayerot Mat’kal the force it is today, said that it is certain that a Palestinian state will be established. I was really not expecting this considering the brutality that he has seen and been part of himself. I think Barak, that “lock-picking bastard”, is an amazing person, but I never expected him to see this as a necessity. Nor did I think he would believe that it could function properly. However, if he has faith that it has to happen, and you can be sure that he will make sure it is secure, then it will work.

Secondly, Iran is still insane. Khamenie, this time, calling the US “An atomic criminal”. Really? He then has the gall to say that nuclear attacks are prevented by religion – yet somehow jihad attacks on civilians are not? Even, you know, considering jihad doesn’t really exist in most Muslim faiths. Oh, what a card. Iran is a threat to all civilized societies across the world, and it’s unclear as to what we can do about them.

I am concerned.

Fucking Turians, never believing Shepard.

I don’t know what prompted that other than my RABID LOVE FOR THAT FUCKING GAME. Seriously. ME2 GOTY or GTFO.

Ah-hem, excuse me. On to the real news.

First off, the RIAA and MPAA are fucking off their rockers. I really don’t understand what the hell they are thinking, wanting to be able to get into our computers remotely and delete what they think is unauthorized material? Seriously, see this shit here. Assholes. They want government backing, too! I would say who the hell would allow this to happen, but with what republicans are bitching about these days, who the hell knows what is possible. I can guarantee you that if this happens all my systems will be switching away from windows to probably freebsd, since I doubt they are smart enough to figure that out. In case you haven’t realized, I don’t really like the RIAA and MPAA, greedy fucking assholes.

It’s hard to believe, but today is the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing. What a tragedy. I hope that we can learn a lot from timmy about how dangerous domestic extremism can get. About how racism can cause such dramatic shifts in personality, and how one can drive themselves to commit acts of terror like this with no clear outcome desired.

The two senior Al-qaeda leaders in Iraq have been killed. While this is a good thing, most don’t understand that AQ operates under a very independent, cellular structure. While it is possible to kill off leaders, often time other cells don’t even realize this for quite a while. This is why it can be so difficult to slow the progress of Al-Qaeda. The reason they can do this while others haven’t is because they have very good funding and great organization. They are still extremely dangerous, but this does set them back quite a bit, thankfully. However, we cannot let our guard down, ever.

Sometimes severe danger to the country comes from odd places. That’s right, this is a link talking about the loss of money for the airlines of the world. Why is this such a concern for me? Simply because airlines are pretty integral to the world economy. As airlines start to collapse or have problems with money, it tends to hurt the economy severely. The loss of airlines could lead to another collapse of the economy, and a possible hurt to global relations as people are not able to travel as easily. It’s just something worrisome for me considering all that is going on in the world presently.

Oh well. That’s really all for now.

Lotsa crazy shit going on at work, and I absolutely have to come in this weekend to fix it. The shitty part is that this means my reserve duty has to be recheduled, and that always makes me feel like a shitbag. Oh well, we do what we have to.

Just bought a new upper for my AR today. I snagged a Spike’s tactical Mid length which you can see by clicking here. Thanks to my buddy Brett for pointing it out, and if you use the coupon code “MIDLEUP” you will get 50$ off that. What a steal. I canceled my rock river order because those fucking assholes kept pushing it back – first it was up to 30 days, then 30-60, and then 60-90. Yeah, I’ll take my business elsewhere, thanks.

In other news, I am considered a trip to Russia sometime this summer. I really want to visit that country – as a child of the Cold War, I have always had an incredible fascination with it. I’m also learning the language, so it would be good. I’ll probably only go if Yuliya can come with me, but who knows how things will be then. I’m not a fatalist, but I prefer to plan for the worst.

Speaking of Russia, I have been on this nuclear disaster kick. First off, there is this awesome pictoral of Chernobyl and Pripyat, and a visit in 2010. Check it out over here. I was also reading wikipedia about Lake Karachay and the Mayak area of Russia, where a category 6 disaster occurred. Can you believe that they have concreted over the whole damn lake because of all the dumping that occurred there? That just blows my mind. What also gets me is the fact Russia still has closed towns! Places that foreigners and even members of their own country just are not allowed to visit. I MUST SEE THESE PLACES. I’m like the epitome of the human race – curiosity and a thirst to discover that which is unknown.

Anyways, I think I’ll follow this post up with a rant about the politics in the United States now. See? See conservatives? I just mention you peripherally and my blood already starts to boil. That and the tea party, you guys are idiots. Taxes the lowest they have been in 50 years and you retards still claim they are too high. Do you really stand behind people that thing the IRS and taxes should be abolished? Don’t you know that shit is necessary? Morons.

So we’ve got a serious problem brewing out there in the Pacific. Yeah, in the ” north pacific gyre” there is a bunch of concentrated plastic strewing. I found this when a friend linked me to this video here. is pretty damn awesome, by the way. Anyways, this chronicles three reporters as they go out on this scientist’s boat to see the plastic collecting in the gyre. It’s basically a big circular stream, so stuff gets caught in a circle, concentrated and stashed there. It’s pretty damn horrifying – watch the video linked.

Now here’s my conundrum: it’s coming down more and more to society versus ecology. I say this because keeping society running now requires a lot of the same shit that is polluting so bad. On the other hand, you have the severe ecologists who try to live with a zero footprint, which is frankly almost impossible in this day and age. Where can we find the compromise? We can try to shift society towards a greener lifestyle, but people are too complacent and selfish. There’s too much of a desire for hedonism and luxury, and so many people these days don’t even know the amazing high you get just from EXERCISING. It’s absolutely absurd. We can see the world slowly dying around us (yet people are still saying global warming as a consequence of this fucking pollution doesn’t exist – pull your head out of your ass please) but we would rather sit in our opulent lifestyle.

Sadly, I’m one of those. I have no idea how to fix this. It concerns me. I can’t withdraw from society and live green, because I’m a type that fights to keep society together and running safe. That’s how I roll. We need to be more concerned about this, more conscious. How do we save the world from ourselves, from our arrogance, from our hedonism (which isn’t totally bad, really), from our selfishness?

I appreciate that you really love your sports. But please stop telling me to “Roll Tide” because half of the time I think you are telling me I need to change my laundry detergent. I really don’t care about what college team is playing who and where and for why. Sports bores the hell outta me unless I’m playing it.

Now, on to other issues since we got that out of the way and I alienated 7/8 of my friends in Georgia. As for the news, there really isn’t much outside of the usual stuff. We’ve got Ford cars to read twitter, some more terrorism shit, and the TSA being dumb again. Find them yourself if you want info, they really aren’t worth the effort.

I am interested in the thoughts people have about the role of higher education in the radicalization process of terrorist suspects overseas. Do you think higher education contributes to, or retards the effect of radical influences. Take into consideration the cultural aspects one might feel the influence of while they are in school.

Yeah, same shit toddling around. People are more concerned about Tiger Woods and his penis than they are with the madness that continues in the Middle East. On the bright side, Iran is in the middle of a damn near revolution, so at least they are occupied and can’t get too feisty. North Korea is quiet, which is a good thing. Iraq is a shithole still, and the government has it’s head lodged so far up it’s ass that it will require a bucket of lube, 6 trucks, and a midget wrestler to extricate themselves.

Well before I bitch about a few stories, head on over to The Existential Mix Archive and grab the latest existential mix by Shutterspeed. Yours truly does the voice intros for them, and 2400 Baud really has pulled some good talent together for Radio None. I’m glad to be a part of it.

Obama says intel screwed up – humorously enough, the CNN title says “Obama says intel system screwed up”. That’s a Fox news style headling, since it seems to say that intelligence is fucked, but it just meant in this situation. Frankly, they need to lay this on the doorstep of the CIA, since they kept the cold war mentality of keeping the info to themselves. However, it’s also possible they did not find it credible, although political spin damage control would never admit that possibility.

Yemen is working with us – in reality, they have been for a while. They go on this sine-wave style cycle of working with us apparently, and it seems to be based on the aid we provide. As long as we consider seeing them a problem, and the government works with us, I would imagine they will keep letting us work there and help us. I’m not really sure, but Yemen is beginning to emerge more and more as a breeding ground for extremism. We are going to have to wait and see on this one, as far as I can tell.

Fareed Zakarai is a very smart man – and I agree completely with him. The TSA seems so politicized now, as a lot of their security measures are so stupid and over the top. Soon, we will be required to strip since they will sew explosives into the lining of shirts and pants, in an extension of the underpants bomber. What then? Full body scanners won’t see small concentrations of that.

Ah fuck it. Here, have something awesome:

So this morning as I was getting ready for work, CNN had a little piece done about militias in the United States, and any possible chance they might develop into Domestic Terror organizations. It was pretty interesting, but there were a few things that I noticed that were downright silly:

1) They show this fat, overweight guy rolling into the bushes doing….hell I don’t know what that was supposed to be.

2) Target acquisition? Seriously? You are teaching them how to…see a target and shoot it? Now don’t get me wrong, that’s a real thing, but they were just lined up shooting at plates.

3) It was refreshing to see the hodgepodge of different weapons, from bolt action rifles to simple AR’s.

4) Here’s the kicker: They did not know what rights, if any, the government was taking away short of the second amendment. Even though they were “worried about the constitution”, gun control was the only issue they knew of – although there has been no move by the administration for quite a while on this.

Anyways, that was humorous. You can watch the piece by clicking here. Oh, and of special note is that they have drawn the interest of The Southern Poverty Law Center , who despite having a somewhat strange name, is a group dedicated to fighting hate…er, groups. They have done quite well against many white-supremacist groups such as the Aryan Brotherhood, so I’m interested to see the direction they will take.

Now for some news stories of interest:
“Karzai 12” rules hinder efforts against the Taliban – Imagine police officers going on patrol, only to be stymied by the fact their “observer” was not there. This is one of the many problems our forces are facing there. It makes me want to recant my prior position on how to fix Afghanistan, to go from helping them to making those dumbasses do it on their own. Only problem is, Taliban will come back in because Karzai is a weak-ass leader. We shall see, but I don’t like putting our troops in even more danger when we are trying to help THEM.

Illinois the new Gitmo? – It may be closer than you think. Despite the fact the reason for Gitmo was that it was NOT on US soil, somehow the conclusion has been made that tossing it in Illinois is a good idea. Here’s what I find funny – this top-of-the-line, state of the art prison system is currently unoccupied. We have overcrowding everywhere – and this place isn’t used? I guess I’m missing something, but boy does that seem dumb. Anyways, will be interesting to watch the partisan politics in full-force on this one.

US asks for more from Pakistan. Rightfully so. However, Pakistan has greatly ramped up their efforts to fight the Taliban, much to their credit. It would be good to see them hold the line on the NW/N more though, and try to dig in against Taliban incursions. I am still very nervous that insurgents pushed to within 60 miles of Islamabad, and I don’t want to see that again.

This is not new. This shit has been going on since the early 80’s (or earlier!). The Taliban loves to attack and kill Pakistani officials that don’t kowtow to their every stupid fucking whim. I hope this keeps ramping up people against them more and more, and maybe the Punjab region will stop having people side with the Taliban as they see this.

Anyways, that’s enough for now. How about a happyfuntime image!
